Sexy Knitwear

Knitwear designer Aisling Camps’ Insta bio reads “Mechanical Engineer-turned-Knitwear Designer. WTF?”. Her designs have been worn by Janelle Monet, Tracee Ellis Ross, and Cardi B, and Camps is on a mission to make knitwear cool with a story of dedication and perseverance.

Aisling Camps is Trinidadian who first came to the States to study mechanical engineering at Columbia University. Unhappy in her first job post graduation, she saved up to get a second bachelor’s in fashion design from FIT. This time after graduating, Camps was not able to find a job and Visa sponsor which landed her back in her childhood home in Trinidad. Inspired by the lush natural landscape of her home country she started to build her namesake brand. She quickly gained traction in the Trinidadian fashion scene, but then won the Green Card lottery to return to New York City in 2014. This time, she was ready to leave her mark on her own terms.

Aisling Camps’ knits are modern, understated, and meticulously designed. Her clothes boast the comfort of a knit, but add a playful element like a plunging neckline or cut-outs. Most of the pieces are hand loomed and Camps still does everything from design to production. As Camps told i-D, “People think about Midol and English Breakfast tea when they think of knits. Fuck that, man.”
